"Shalom" 1969/5729


Shalom 1969


The set of coins issued by the Bank of Israel to commemorate the 21st Anniversary of the State and dedicated to those who lost their lives in the struggle for independence. It was a year of hope for Peace between the State of Israel and the Arab countries.


Description of the Coin

Front

The coin displays the word "SHALOM" in Hebrew in the center of the coin. The denomination "100" or "10" Lirot around the rim with the date "1969/5729" in English and Hebrew.

Reverse

The inscription in the center of the coin, "But No Man Knoweth His Place of Burial" (Deuteronomy, 34:6). The words are positioned to resemble the battlefield monument of the "Unknown Soldier". An olive branch with an army helmet in the background at the lower right.

The uncirculated silver coin was struck in 2 varieties. One mintmarked with a Hebrew 'koph' below the helmet, one without. The Proof coins identified with a small Hebrew 'mem' at the right of the helmet.

Uncirculated: A Mint State coin struck on a standard planchet.

Proof: A coin which was made with special care. The coins are struck on specially selected and polished planchets. They are struck using polished dies. The coins exhibit a mirror-like surface in the fields and a frosted appearance on the raised points of the coin. A small Hebrew 'mem' mintmark will appear on the "Shalom" coin at the right of the army helmet.
