"Naomi Shemer" Composer and Songwriter

ISRAEL'S "Arts and Culture" Coin Series

Year 2005/5765

Naomi Shemer

The third in a Series of Commemorative Coins designed by renowned Israeli artists is the Naomi Shemer Coin, issued by the Bank of Israel.

Naomi Shemer was known as Israel's "First Lady of Song". She was a prolific song writer and composer and expressed her profound love of the beautiful landscapes of Israel through song and poetry.

Born in 1930 in Kibbutz Kinneret overlooking the Sea of Galilee, Naomi Shemer’s exceptional musical talent was enhanced by the inspiration she drew from the magnificent surrounding views of the Lake and Jordan Valley. She studied at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem.

Shemer magically put words to music and music to words. Her repertoire included hundreds of songs. Her most famous song was “Jerusalem of Gold” composed in 1967.

Naomi Shemer passed away in June of 2004.
